Common Core in the Classroom—Standard Units of Measurement (Grade 2)
Donna Toomey, a 2nd grade teacher at John M. Clayton Elementary in Frankford, Delaware, teaches a lesson about standard units of measurement. Donna's lesson is aligned with 2nd grade Common Core Math Standard: Measurement and Data 1.
Two weeks prior to introducing this particular lesson, the students focus on non-standard measurement by using links, clips, and objects that do not follow meters, feet, or other "standard" units of measurement.
Donna always begins each lesson with an activating strategy. To begin this particular lesson, Donna has the students come in and highlight essential questions and vocabulary for the unit and lesson concepts on their curriculum learning maps.
The activating strategy provides opportunities for the students to take part in their own learning, and once the students have discussed the day's objective, Donna can introduce the learning target by building on prior knowledge.
Donna introduces rulers and how to measure with them. Through trial and error, she helps them discover the importance of beginning a measurement at 0 rather than at 1. As the final step to the lesson, students must compare standard units of measurement with non-standard units.
